What are some of the symptoms suggesting that you need a therapist?

Why is it that some people experience mental stress more than others and need to consult a therapist?

There may be several causes, to name a few commonly seen

  • Family psychiatric history of depression, and mood disorder whether diagnosed or not.
  • The nature of a person – some people are by nature more sensitive than others

What could be the errors in parenting? To name some:
One or both parents were emotionally unavailable to the development needs of the child. They may have been disturbed themselves, or too harsh or critical or devaluing and thus not unavailable emotionally or physically for the child.
Circumstance – unfortunate circumstances such as the death of a parent, sickness, addiction, loss of work – financial instability, the child was separated from their parent at a critical stage in life.

How does Individual therapy help?

It helps in the re-awakening of the Real Self. The qualities related to the real self are as follows:

  • A real self is spontaneous and enthusiastic
  • Has a sense of Self -entitlement, but not narcissistic
  • Can identify one’s unique individual wishes and use autonomous initiative to express them in reality
  • Has a sense of commitment – to self objectives or in a relationship and the ability to preserver to attain that goal despite obstacles
  • Is creative – use the self to change old, familiar patterns into new, unique, and different patterns, i.e. not rigid.
  • Can express self fully in a close relationship with minimal anxiety about abandonment or engulfment
  • Is autonomous and self-sufficient.

How does seeking help from a therapist differ from speaking to a friend or a well-wisher?

Speaking to a friend or well-wisher may provide temporary relief, but it does not give a solution or help the person overcome his/her weaknesses or defenses as we call them. Thus the person remains stuck.

How long does Therapy take?

It can take anywhere between 6 months to 2 years or more depending upon the unmanageability of a client.
